First Monitor-Giant or Dwarf Ackie?

pgross8245 Aug 19, 2003 07:45 AM

Hello,
I am ready to purchase my first monitor. I have been researching for awhile and decided that the ackie would be a great first monitor for me. For those of you with ackies, do you prefer the dwarf or giant? I understand the giant are a little bit more outgoing. I have not found much info to compare the two. I have a 48 x 19 x 24 cage, forest bed substrate, a basking rock, hiding cave, climbing branches, water bowl and I have the Zoo med powersun uva/uvb light in both 100 and 160 watt so I can use whichever brings the temp up to the proper degree. I have made the szd and have it frozen in meatballs, will order crickets, superworms etc. Any other suggestions? What is the adult size difference? Should I have one or two as I have read they are social? Baby or adult? Any input would be great. Feel free to e-mail me privately if you don't feel it should be on the forum. Thanks for any information.

about differences between (v.a.acanthurus) reds and (v.a.brachyurus) yellows?

Dwarf is sometimes used (technically incorrect) to describe ackies and other odatria. The 'Western Giant' or whatever seems like just a marketing gimmick for a yellow.

I have three reds, and they (while not near as docile as some claim) are probably the easiest to handle monitors I have other than a real sweetheart young female peachie.

Personally I would do things differently (No powersun, SDZ/Turkey, or ForestBed). I use a much simpler mice and crickets, floodlamps and a sandy desert dirt. But I have not gotten fertile eggs yet......

At least not in this country, there are some small types in oz, but not here. All the types here can get from 15 inches to over three feet, as adults, depending on conditions or husbandry. So the dwarf ackie or western giant is really really dumb. Hate to be so rude, but just check around.

I know Pete Weiss advertises the giants, but look at the max size of his, around 22 inches, heck they all do that. Whats the deal, its only another way to take your money.

If I really feed normal yellow ackies they grow large. One male grew to 27 inches in one year or I also had females of the same strain reproduce at 11 total inches. F
