Is the Mel. Cal the same as a Mexican Black??????probably not but was wondering

ZFelicien Jul 25, 2007 05:48 PM

Believe it or not they're not the same... some people have said they are but Mexican Blacks are a totally different Ssp. In the 1st pic u can make out the banded pattern on the melanistic

on a side note: those should be produced before the gene is lost...

Are you saying the melanistics should be produced before the gene is lost?

I doubt the gene will disappear...
Don Shores works with melanistics...
If I breed these two together, they will make melanistics.

Not to mention breeding blizzard cali kings, you might get a melanistic here and there.

But I like them.
I like the way they look.
It just took me forever to actually get my hands on one.

Both of those snake came from Don's collection... but I'm unsure if he breeds plain `ol Melanistic to Melanistic at all... i wasn't implying you should breed those two snake together but if u can mate those two males together then yea i guess u'd be really onto something... (are they even the same gene?!)

Yes the Gene is in BLIZZARDS when's the last time you saw a bunch of MELANISTIC Cali kings for sale... I can't remember... don't think I've ever seen a bunch for sale! Are people really going to back breed Blizzards in to normals to get MELANISTICS ( I doubt it)

Listen we're not talking about albino, lavender, hypo or BEB, here... those mutations we see up for sale ALL the time... But SOLID BLACK (well all most) cali kings! I saw one on the classifieds about 2-3 yrs ago being sold with it's blizzard sibling till I saw the one you've got there being sold this yr...

you have a Jewel on your hands and I was making a suggestion... take it or leave it

Now if HYPER-melanistic and MELANISTIC are the same gene... then hey... whatever I guess??

I produced a solid brown cal king last year by using a Blizzard.

I also bred a Blizzard to a Mendota last year and got all Mendota looking babies...so the "melanistc/hypermelanistic" gene IS THE SAME gene. I bred a solid brown cal king (that I picked up at a show) to a Mendota this year...and no eggs...so I will have to wait another year on that project....only next year I will use the pure Chocolate male that I produced.

I believe that the Mendota, Davis, Baja, Chocolate Banana and the solid Chocolate cal kings are all THE SAME GENE.
