When I put my RTB in his new home for the first time the Aspen was laid out neatly, covering the whole bottom. Now, four days later, he has it like this. When I got him he was staying on that fake green carpet stuff. Any ideas?

One of the many reasons why I hate aspen. Newspaper works nicely and is free.

I'm not mean. You're just a sissy.

He's probably looking for someplace to hide. Looks to me like he's cruising around the edges of the aquarium trying to get out (and go hide) and his body is pushing the aspen away from the edge. Try putting two or three shelters in there and see if doesn't stop that. You could also make the aspen deeper so he can bury down into it and cover himself up and/or put a background around three sides of the aquarium to eliminate the illusion that he can get through the glass.

I agree with the previous poster...give him more hides! I use aspen for all of my snakes, and wouldn't change it! It is one of the best overall substrates for snakes IMO!

I have one boa who pushes his newspapers all over the place every night. I hear him doing it. I have 15 other boas and none have done it, and I have never had a boa in the past that did it either, but this guy does. Maybe you just have a snake like him. Try newspapers for a week and see if he stops doing it or keeps doing it even to the newspapers. If he does, just let him, maybe that's his idea of fun. If he stops doing it with newspapers maybe he just doesn't like aspen. I don't see any reason why a boa couldn't be sensitive to aspen, it's a plant. Do give him a hide box on each side too though, in case he's trying to hide by burying himself.

Why would you think he doesn't like it ?
It feels different, smells different. That pattern shows clear signs of pacing back and forth.Stressful reaction to a change in its environment IMO.As mentioned the addition of a hide would only help.Putting the entrance facing "away" from that 24 hr sun you have shining in there, again can only help.
