Het X Het

MannyRottie Jul 25, 2007 09:18 PM

If I breed a het albino female to a het male albino, will I get at least 1 visual albino baby? I know my odds are better with a homo bred to a het, but I am patient and am not trying to run a business. What do you guys think?

From a het X het breeding you should get visuals plus 66% het sibs

Has this beed done successfully (getting visuals) or do most people just breed a het to a homo? I honestly do not want to spend 3 to 4 grand for a pied. I really want one so I figure just breed a het male to a het female. Thanks for the info

People do it all the time. It is not successful in producing a morph on every breeding but each egg has a 25% shot at hatching a visual. You just have to get a little lucky and hope for a lot of eggs.

IMO if you're doing things for fun, instead of spending say $3000 for a pied... buy a 1.2 or 1.3 group of hets. Raise them up and breed them out and see what you get. That's the fun part of the pied project.

I would try to get at least 1.2 that way if one of your females decides to be a "problem" snake you have a backup. It's a good way to go if you can swing it. If not, a 1.1 pair will certainly work for you, it just may take a bit more time. Maybe not though!

If I were in your shows and knowing what I know now I would get 1.1 het pieds and 0.? possible het pieds all from the breeder with a solid reputation, written het guarantee, and immaculate record keeping. The possible hets would cost you a fraction of a 100% het. You would have a 75% chance of getting at least one het from two 50% possible hets. You would also have a 25% chance of getting two hets. If the possible het girls prove to not be hets you have some extra breedable females for other projects. It is a gamble but just like poker if you always bet with the best hand you'll always come out on top in the end.

He will not get "at least" anything. It's possible, and in fact not that unlikely, to crap out entirely. It's also possible (but a lot less likely) that every single baby will be an albine.

sorry

Technically yes, but not always. I have seen posts by multiple people this year that got no visuals from het x het breedings, even with 7 eggs in the clutch. Genetic odds only play so much a part, luck is also a factor. That's why this season I'm only doing visual x het pairings, I have sucky odds so I need every bit of luck I can get.

Luck is a factor BECAUSE the genetics are only odds. Nothing is certain. "Technically" the answer to the question is "no" because he is not assured of anything.

Not surprising. With hetxhet breedings and a clutch size of 7 offspring you will crap out 13.3% of the time. With 5 offspring you'll crap out 23.7% of the time.

I totally understand what you are saying. I am not a big time breeder. Honestly I never bred anything except my Rottweilers. Anyway, I would be happy to get one visual out of 7. I just do not want to buy a visual if I can possibly get 2 hets and create one myself. Just a rewarding thing I guess.

You could just as easily open the incubator one day,and see two or three pieds out out of four eggs....Then you breed your new male pied back to mom the next year..get six eggs..but no pieds(but at least they will be het because you used a pied sire.)
It's all a crapshoot(Unless you breed pied to pied.)GL
