Med question.

girliegirl Aug 19, 2003 09:21 AM

Vet prescribed Baytril for Albert's infected foot and calf. I mixed it w/juice and give him his dose everyday. Since he has started taking this med, his appetite has decreased. He barely eats one cricket. Albert can't afford not to eat, so I have been feeding him beef baby food. I squirt a little in his mouth and he swallows. My question....Is this okay?? Should I be feeding a different meat?? I sprinkle it w/calcium and vits so he doesn't miss those.

The other thing is the skin on Albert's thigh split. His calf muscle is exposed. He still uses the leg as usual. I called the vet and he sells an ointment to put on the exposed flesh. Albert is on lineolium (misspelled I'm sure) and I disinfect it every other day. Should I get the ointment from the vet, put petroleum jelly or neosporin on it?? My husband says to forgo the $20 tube from the vet and put neosporin on it. I'm willing to do whatever is best for Albert.

Any thoughts on this or what to do?? Thanks Bunches!!

Poor guy, well the baby food thing is good, some people use squash, chicken and veggies, you could use some petilite, spelled wrong, gives him a little energy !
As far as the antibiotic your using Baytril, alot of people use that for their beardies when they have problems and if I remember correctly, while on it, their appetite does decrease !
You could ask around on that forum Carie I'm sure someone will confirm that. I dont know why the med has that effect, but it does. Just get as much into him as ya can, chop some bugs up in the blender along with the baby food. Sonds terrible, but hey Blenders wash up afterwards, hehehehe.
And I agree with hubby go for the tube of oint, I forget the name, but they have some real good stuff ! What makes his thigh skin split? Weird! Hope he feels better, perrty Albert ! Eve

Thanks eve!! I don't know why the skin split, but I think it's because of his calf swelling. Maybe the skin couldn't take it anymore? I just feel terrible for him and wish these meds would work faster. The swelling has gone down in his foot, it just has to do it's magic on the calf and ankle. I actually mixed the meds in w/gatorade. The doc said grape juice, but I thought that gatorade would be better for him. I will check w/the BD people on the appetite decreasing w/this med.

Thanks! You're the best!!
Carrie

Baytril is a little stronger and more specific ( and expensive) antibiotic than other like cephalexin and amoxicillin. It can depress the appetite when given orally, but I don't know why. I agree with eve about the pedialyte. Try mixing the meds with pedialyte, vits, and chicken baby food. The sugars and flavorings in sports drinks may affect his system ( in my humble opinion at least).I would spring for the vet's ointment, it probably contains an antibiotic that complements the Baytril he is getting. Out of curiousity, what dosage of Baytril did the vet prescribe? I'm always interested in that stuff!
Good luck with Albert

He prescribed .7cc. I already mixed the meds w/gatorade. It has artificial flavorings, but no sugar. I checked for that. I called the vet back and asked more questions on the ointment. He said I could use the neosporin, it basically has the same ingredients.

Thank you.

It sounds like you covered all your bases! I guess all you can do is wait for the antibiotics to work. I'm sure he will be okay in time.
Good luck!

But seeing his appetite go away makes me worry. A LOT!! He's a lot of fun to watch, but now all he does is sleep. I did find that he likes his head pet like my beardies. Awwww.

Thanks for the "double" support! he,he.

I took pics of his leg, if I remember to bring the memory card to work tomorrow I'll post pics for ya to see why I'm so worried about him.

Later gator!!

Ok, I dont want to sound sick or anything, but do you have a picture of his split leg you could post? There no real reason for me wanting one other the im very curious what could cause it and what it looks like

I don't think that you are sick. But....curiousity did kill the cat. LOL Just kidding. It's a lot more gross now than when the skin first split. The muscle is exposed and since I put the ointment on, it's one giant red blotch! I forgot the memory card at home, but will do my best to remember it tomorrow.

See ya!
Carrie
