silk worms?

CaptainJWL Jul 26, 2007 08:22 AM

I have heard that silk worms are a good food for my bearded dragons. My dragons are about 4 months old. Right now the dragons diet consists of crickets and greens an some occasional small meal worms and once in a while some little pieces of fruit.

Are the silk worms good for the dragons? If so, where can i get them? The 3 local shops around me(2 commercial and one private) do not carry them. Is there a recommended online store?

Thanks guys!

Silkworms are one of the best feeders in my opinion. I keep them full time. Right now I am having the best luck with the silkworms from Coastalsilkworm.com

Silkworms are an excellent food source for bearded dragons and other reptiles. They are pretty easy to raise and breed as well so once you get in some, you can let a couple dozen cocoon and eventually keep the eggs to hatch later on as you need them. Plenty of sites and past posts detail how to keep and breed silkworms. A google search will reveal tons of info. The feeder forum here also have guides.

Where to find them, many online feeder stores have them available/ Check the Businesses and classified tabs above to find one near you.

If you're Canadian like me, then good places to check out are:

Yea you just buy the bulk food from the silkworm suppliers. I buy 10 lbs. of dry food for $60 it makes 40 lbs. of prepared food.

I don't see why not. It's just a dry powder in a bag. If the Dachiu's can ship dragons then I would think coastal silkworms could ship dry food. lol.

Not sure if Europe has silkworm supplies stores. may be an ideal to research that, it would be much cheaper to ship it from a more local source, than over seas. Then again, if they get it from suppliers in the US, the mark up they will charge, may make no difference...
