Question About Blue Eyed Lucys

fgs Jul 26, 2007 04:47 PM

I'm thinking of holding back some female mojaves. Based on comments I'm hearing about the dead end white snake market do you guys think this is a good idea?

I appreciate your response.

Brian

It is only a dead end market in the fact that you cannot do anything the white snake, but you can still make pastel mojaves, spider mojaves, and the list goes on. White snakes will always be in demand, and even more so when the price comes down.

Well I happen to like them.
a no brainer..if your really a ball enthusiast and at my age the sooner the better.lol

I would! I really like some of the Mojave crosses, especially the Spider Mojave and the Hypo Mojave. I still like the white snakes, too.

and I don't think the white snake market is a dead one. Far from it in my opinion.

Nice mojave.

the color combinations you can create with a white snake are dead end, because it will not enhance the color of any snake to breed it to a white snake. The animals that created the white snake are great for pastel kingpings, kingpins, pastel mojave, and many other great combos. If you breed the white snake to a normal you can make whatever created that white snake, but the snake is dead end as far as enhancing the visual appearance of any other snake. I am going to try to make one of each of the white snakes, just for a personal collection. I have a good start with a mojave, fire, and yellow belly. I still need a Russo het, lesser, and butter to have the ones I want to work with.

There was a pic on here a while back of an ivory pastel. It was Yellow. As Ivorys age they get whiter. The fact that this snake was yellow proves that the white snake can still be crossed in some cases. Until a Super Lesser Cinny or some other white snake cross is made we don't know what it will look like. It could be purple for all we know.

I eat human infants. They, like everything else, taste like chicken. What?

Imagine if leucistic was a recessive trait. There would be a frenzy for them.

royalkreationz Jul 26, 2007 09:23 PM

I feel that leucistics are a recessive trait. Look at it this way. If you breed a mojave to a normal, you get 50/50 mojavies and normals. If you breed a fire to a normal, you get 50/50 fires and normals. If you breed a het pied to a normal, you get 50/50 hets and normals. I am of the opinion that the snakes that produce white snakes are just visually heterozygous since you have to breed them to another snake of the same genetics to get the end result of a white snake. The same goes with albinos. You have the same odds of producing a white snake with fire to fire as you do het albino to het albino to produce an albino, It is just that hets for white snakes are better looking than hets for albino or pied. This is different than spider or pin to normal. Even pastels are visual het for super pastel. That is what I call a maxed out gene. You can breed super pastels together and you get super pastels. You breed two white snakes together, you get two white snakes. you breed to albinos together, you get albinos. If you breed to super pastels together, you cannot get a super pastel to the 4th power. That is why all these animals IMHO are just visual hets. for the recessive animal, which is what you get when you breed them both together.

JenHarrison Jul 27, 2007 02:47 AM

That's exactly what co-dom animals are -- visual hets for the super/dominant form.

It has been explained like this for years, it isn't some new opinion that you thought up...

Yep, she's 100% correct, this is the standard definition for what Co-Dom and Incomplete Dom describe.

Recessive, is only when in heterozygous form, the mutant gene is NOT expressed in any noticeable way, and the animal's phenotype remains Wild / Normal, while it's GENOTYPE would be "Het. such and such".

Do what YOU want to do.

It's that simple.

ajfreptiles Jul 26, 2007 10:48 PM

Hello Brian,

My take on this is the white snake is far from a dead end market....it is most likely going to be one of the strongest!
Hold them back and produce...you will sell every one you can make....
Think about it....How many white snakes do you see available at the shows?? Also How many people do you think that are not breeders would want a Blue eyed Lucy?? I think that years down the road, if and when they are selling for $1,000 each....the general public will gladly pay that or more for one!

That's just my 2 cents....

PS: After what the Pastel and yellow belly Mojaves look like...they should hold alot more value.

I don't think that lucies are a dead-end market, but I do think that super mojave lucies are less desireable because of the dark/colored head and lack of being pure white. If I were you, I would hold back your female mojaves for something else and invest in a male or female lesser. Pair your lesser with one of your mojaves to create a pure white lucy, which are in higher demand.

Nice mojo!

Actually, the mojave x lesser cross does have a yellow stripe much like an ivory. It is widely believed that butters make the best leucistic crosses. I have only seen the mojave x lesser, so I can't say as far as seeing a mojave x butter in person.
