Snake defecating one day after eating..

shane81 Jul 26, 2007 10:32 PM

Is that normal? Fairly new to snakes (coming from the monitor side) but it seems kind of fast? With my monitors it was usually 2 or 3 days before they went.

Yeah, maybe, if you fed a pinki to a 5 foot Florida kingsnake. LOL Give us something to work with. What kind of snake? What size? What size mouse? What type of heating are you using? How warm is the cage? My kings sometimes refuse food for months and still defecate months after not eating. Strange.

Thanks for the responses, I have a 2 year old California King (about 3 feet long) housed in a 20 gallon long. I have a UVA heating bulb/lamp (50 watt) on one side and UVB lighting on the other side. Large water bowl (enough for him to fit in), hide box, and a cool spot on the right side of the cage. He spends more time on the cooler side of the cage than he does the warmer side.

I feed 1-2 prekilled adult mice per week, he always readily accepts them.

O.K. Well in that case I would say it's either of the reasons Kerby & Chris pointed out. And because he's being fed that often you'll probably see this happen again. Kerby is right about them pooping after cleaning the cage, it's almost like they want their sent in the cage or something. Also, if they're already getting close to defecate and you handle them for a minute or more, after you put them back they might go. It's like it unsettles their stomach. I've seen that a few times.

A lot of my cal kings and cornsnakes will poop right after I change their cage, regardless of when I fed them last.

Also, it might have passed a previous meal.

My Pac Gopher is the worst.
She has a nice big water dish. I only use bottled spring water.
When does she poop?
The first time I change her water after she eats. And ALWAYS in the water dish.

I'm tempted to use tapwater for those changes just to get her to poop before giving her the spring water.

I'm just paranoid - back in the 90s, I had a couple Northern Red-Legged Frogs I collected in WA (illegal, I now know - as WA doesn't allow collection).

They were doing fine for months - then I did a partial water change and within a couple days they were dead. Yes, I used dechlor first. I have no idea what the actual cause was - but I don't even use tap water for my cats now.

Safe for humans != safe for pets. So I'd prefer not to take the risk.

Don't worry about it at all!! It's 100% fine.. no matter what type of snake it is...
