Letters to Editor of Austin Chronicle

Joe Forks Jul 27, 2007 08:27 AM

Aside from the nice response on the forum, we need to draft at least 25 well thought out factual hard copy letters to the editor.

If this silliness keeps up we're going back to the Governor and demand he remove Kercheval and Hilderbran from the committees they serve. Don't think we can do it? Think again.

Then we're going to start a campaign to bring INTENSE public scrutiny to TP&WD's lack of non-game management.

If you want to see it, email me.

When your letter is in the mailbox, post here to confirm. This is a great opportunity to respond and be heard. Don't waste it.

Everyone remember when you write that Mr. Kercheval is NOT an elected official. If I understand the situation correctly, Rep. Hildebrand and any committee member can request his removal. I will double check this. Based on the Austin Chronicle article I have come to believe more and more that he is the problem. Same can be said for HB 1309. As to Matt Wagner, I have spoken to him in the past and he seemed reasonable. I am surprised by his comments. I agree with those who have posted suggesting that herps should be regulated like fish. It makes sense to me. Also, I think it is important to always emphasize that herping is not hunting in the traditional sense since no firearms are used,

One more comment, I think it is important also to emphasize that reptiles and amphibians can easily be a managed resource like game and food fish. I don't want the powers to be to think that management is difficult or we may not like the consequences. We need them to understand that herp. collecting can be controlled as easily as fishing. Don't ever want to go back to the 70's !!

to emphasize is the inherently non-lethal "catch and release"aspect of herping. We not only don't kill our quarry, we are actually releasing the vast majority, and even protecting many others from certain vehicular mortality!
