Wow, what a suprise!

Turtlegirl Aug 19, 2003 10:32 AM

Wow, Well I thought that all three of my Mali Uros were MALES but I was wrong!
One of my adult 'Males' layed 3 eggs yesterday!!
She hasn't been with the male for several months, so I doubt they're fertile. I tried incubateing them but they're all hard, discolored, and dried up now.
lol but atleast I know I have a FEMALE Mali now!

My mali is thin after laying the eggs though...
What can I do to fatten her back up?

And does anyone have some info on Mali breeding that they could share with me incase I decide to breed her in the future?

Thank You For Your Time!

That is one gorgeous looking male-mimic female you've got there
I've heard that defrosted frozen peas are good for putting on weight plus most uros love them. If yours eats some bugs you could try a few waxworms. Waxworms are high in fat and calcium too.

Hope this helps and good luck on any future breeding projects

Thank You.

lol the picture I posted is of my male... here's the female.

I'll deffinately try the peas. -And I'll order some waxies as well.

I'm getting worried about her though...
She's laying another egg.
I picked her up, and she really is skinny.

What about giveing her a Pinkie mouse? I gave my Beardy a few of them after she layed her eggs...
Should I give one to my Uro?

Thank you for your time and help!

lol, well she could still pass herself off as a male
I wouldn't recommend the pinkie mouse. A uro's digestive system is specifically designed for vegetable matter, not meat products. Crickets, mealworms, and waxworms is about as far as it can go for digesting meat products and even then should only be given as a treat once in a while (a few crix or waxworms per week). A beardie's main diet is crickets and mealworms and is more capable of handling meat.
Just stick with the veggies but add peas to them and a waxworm or two and she should get her weight back up in no time. Dehydration is a major concern if she is not eating. If she starts getting too dehydrated you may have to soak her every once in a while (there's a couple of posts regarding how to do this properly, please read them first).
Good luck

I just hatched a few malis hatchlings so i think i could give you the basics of breeding. First you brumate them. You can look at deer fern farms for that because it takes a lot of time to fully explain that, but what u basically do is stop feeding them, turn on the lights for shorter periods of time, then turn down the heat, and then you slowly change every thing back to normal and start feeding them again. 2-4 weeks after they come out of brumation they start to breed, males will chace females around the cage biting thier backs and sides. The males also spin in circles to mark their teritory. When this starts to happen put in a nesting site, i use a 5 gallon container filled with moist sand. I also have PVC pipes sticking out of the container so it is like a natural burrow. then a week before she lays her eggs she starts to dig like crazy. After you remove the eggs out of the nesting box put them in an incubator at 93 degrees F. Then the eggs start to hatch between 55-65 days. For me it took 75 days to hatch. After they hatch you feed them adult poop for the first few weeks with thier veggies. I also give each hatchlings 3 wax worms every week. The hatchlings need a about a 10 gallon tank with a basking spot around 110-115 degrees F.

Wow that was long. This is just a summary of what you do. Go to deer fern farms care sheet for more informating on brumation and breeding. And for your skinny female give her some hibiscus leaves. they have high protien.

Thank You!!

I'll deffinately wait awhile to breed her because she is just so darn skinny!
But now that I know that all my malis aren't males, I'd love to start breeding them in the future.
Thank you so much for your time and help-- I appreciate it!

Thanks, I'll be sure and get her some wax worms and peas asap!
-Can I use canned peas, or should they be frozen/thawed?
I'm just really worried about her cuz she's so skinny and she isn't eating much.
I soaked her yesterday afternoon but she didn't drink anything...
I'll be sure and give her some extra tlc

Thank u!

I would avoid the canned peas since they have added salt in them which isn't very good for uros. Most brands of frozen peas don't have this excess salt.

Hope she gets nice and fat real soon

Maybe it will help.

Hello from the Netherlands... this is my Uro-Website

Turtlegirl Aug 21, 2003 12:08 PM

This morning I went to feed her and I found her dead.
I'm so sad.
She was fine untill she started laying the un-fertile eggs...
After she layed them she became soo skinny and stopped eating.
Poor girl.
I feel awful and I'm so sad that I lost her...
