weight questions...

Darksky Jul 27, 2007 12:12 PM

recently a fellow reptile keeper told me that reptilian pets should mirror well fed wild specimens (slimmer and athletic rather than pudgy or downright fat) for optimal health. this makes sense to me considering every other animal including humans seem to benefit from slimmer more muscular body types. i was worried my 2 ladies were a tad thin because their tails and bodies werent as bulky as many leos that i have seen. i weighed them today and they both are about 60g. both girls eat well (they aren't pigs, but they aren't exactly dieting either haha) and are quite swift moving when exploring. at what weight do you consider an adult leo to be too skinny (40g, 50g?) or too fat (80 g?).

Not sure about the extreme ends of the scale, but my female is about 60g and almost 10" long nose to tail, and she looks a healthy weight to me. Much like yours, she's neither starving nor eating to excess. I have certainly seen some overly fat and overly thin examples; for me it's something that I know when I see it, rather than a specific weight range, though that's probably because I don't weigh every Leo I see.

I'm gonna have to agree with that. It's more about sight than just straight weights. Maybe you could p[ost a pic? I have several females that top out around 70, and never go higher, just get fatty armpits and stop eating for awhile. If they are steady and look good, I'd say they're prob fine. I do recommend some exercise on a regular basis- either by taking them out and letting them run around exploring, or by changing the tanks some around once in a awhile to keep them active.
