How much should I feed my 40# sulcata?

stenodactylus Jul 27, 2007 12:54 PM

He can eat as much grass as he wants, but how much other food should we give him? He'll eat as much as we give him and never seems to get full.

Ha ha, they are eating machines.
I would let him take the natural route as he's doing now and let him graze as much as he likes on grasses...it's probably a good idea to have some sort of hay around for him (Timothy, Bermuda, Orchad)--
You can also add some leaves/flowers from plants that are edible to torts, mine LOVE Hibiscus, Mulberry Leaves, Grape leaves etc.

You may want to supplement him with some calcium/vitamins maybe once a week. It's something I picked up from everyone else...I feed a few Mazuri pellets to my older one once a week and supplement with Calcium (no D3) and vitamins, I grade some carrots on top and he loves it!!
Some don't believe in supplementing with these vitamins if they have access to leaves, flowers, clovers, hay, grass--but I still do.

Ole natural is best! Slow and steady growth.

P.S..I cheated yesterday and gave my guys watermelon. Shhhhh don't tell anyone. (I only do this once a blue moon)

He's got access to it but I've never seen him actually eat it. He eats the lawn grass and any dandy lions he can find; I also have a small apple tree so he hunts for apples from time to time.

He likes the cactus pads, bell peppers and dandy lion greens and really enjoys collard/mutard greens and of course red leaf lettuce.

You may or may not notice him eating they hay...either way I'd leave some down for him to munch on. I mix between Orchard and and Timothy--and I mist it it down a little with water.

Mine love any kind of salad leaves I give them..I've really started to limit that since all the research and communication I've been given on feeding torts. If I have a few salad leaves from a salad I'm eating or that i've purchased from the store I maybe throw a handful out every couple of weeks but that's it.

And as far as the apples go, I know they are high in sugar so I'd try and keep those picked up as much as possible--you probably don't want him eating those as much as he is. Especially if they have seeds inside. A little snack every once in awhile wouldn't hurt but too much isn't good.

Hence my watermelon treat they got yesterday.
