Ovulation question

I was asked a question and had trouble explaining it. Could ya help? "When do snakes ovulate? Can they only get pregrent at that time? And how do you know when they are?"

I'm no corn breeder, but bred ball pythons a few times. During ovulation balls will have a swelling mid-body. But since snakes have been known to hold sperm for more than a year, I do not think the time is critical. I would think optimum is right before ovulation?

I'm sure others will have more experience. I was just browsing and thought I'd ad my view.
