tonyfry Jul 27, 2007 09:24 PM

Hi,

We're a couple of Kiwi's living in Mobile Alabama for a couple of years, and found this little snake on our front door step.

Could you please let us know what sort of snkae it is so we can tell our son.

I have tried to attach the photo, so please let me know if it hasn't worked.

Thank you

Hmmm... thatlooks like a crowned snake. I've caught a few of them, and I live just a little north of you. Ever heard of Fayette, Alabama? Ok, maybe a lot north of you, but I know that these snakes have a range that includes yours and my area. Don't worry, it's a harmless little snake with a pretty specialized diet. It eats stuff like salamanders and worms, in case you want to keep it as a pet or anything.

Whoops, sorry for the wrong info. Around here we have crowned snakes that look really similar to those, and I'm pretty sure we don't have any red-bellied snakes. Sorry about that they are pretty similar snakes.

you can't post pictures from your hard drive. You need to upload your photo to an online photo gallery/website first.

Hi, and thanks for you responses so far.

I have now managed to work the photo system, and so here is the photo.

Please let us know what it is. It was only about 6 inches long.

Thank you

Tony

That is a red-bellied snake, Storeria occipitomaculata. Not a threat to children or pets. Feeds on earthworms, slugs & other terrestrial/subterranean soft-bodied critters.

Thanks Greg.

Glad we let it go now !!! Nieghbour wanted us to kill it, but just gave it a new home instead.

Cheers

Refraining from killing a snake is pretty much always the right choice. The attached website will give you quite a bit of info on the venomous snakes in your area.
