Mexican Black Kingsnakes: Who's got em?

HerpDoc Jul 28, 2007 05:48 PM

I'm hoping to work with Mexican Black Kings (L.g. nigritus) again for the first time in over 15 years. Back in the day I was breeding them, the choice of where to go for quality animals was easy. Bob Applegate had some of the nicest, totally black nigritus in the country.

Bob doesn't work with them anymore. I'm wondering if any of you readers could recommend some breeders from which I can acquire a 3 or 4 really nice, totally black nigritus for the start of a new breeding project.

Many thanks in advance, HerpDoc

Thanks for the reply, Brandon. His hatchlings look very nice. I would also need another recommendation, however, since I want to acquire at least 2.2 or 2.3 unrelateds. Anyone else out there working with nice MBKs?

Thanks again.

She's an excellent feeder too.
I'm very happy with her.

I agree, Tom has some, they may start out with a tiny bit of pattern or not, I have 2.2 from him, all are solid except the two white chin shields.

Back when I had a female MBK, she was similar as yours, with a few white scales on her chin. I actually preferred that look, as I like how the white scales contrast with the way the snake is black all over and if I ever get one again, that is what I would look for, for my personal taste.

Killer snake there Todd!

The white patches on the chin seem to be extremely common in MBKs.
I like to call it a "soul patch"

I also have a female '06 MBK bred by New Age Reptiles.

I got her late in '06 and she was already eating fuzzies when she arrived.

She is *almost* as black as they come now with just one little white spot on her belly (and the soul patch), but she had a decent amount of visual pattern even on her sides when she arrived, and it virtually all is gone now.

I'll post a pic after she sheds.

I got my MBK from nokturnal Tom. Just about the coolest snake I've ever come into contact with. No problems when it comes to feeding(unless you count being an overeager feeder to be a problem) and an awesome personality.

He's an '06. Here's a picture from the very first day that I got him. The water bowl in the dish with him is the bottom of your typical paper cup from the office water cooler. As a matter of fact, he was still at the office in the picture. I got him January 5, 2007(which was really cool because my birthday was two days later!!)
