OK I know another AFS question.

But I am posing this Q just to get more info on the subject.

I just picked up 2 trios of AFS and was wondering.

To all the breeders that are working with them what do you feed yours? If different than your rats or mice.

What are you caging them in? Again if it is different than what your others are in.

Thanks

To add that I have them in my rat rack right now (A seperate rack all to them self) and I am feeding them the same as my mice and rats.

Feed them lab blocks, same as your mice and rats. I also supplement occasionally with rolled oats, sunflower seeds, and they LOVE millet. Even the very small ones will eat millet while they are still nursing.

Housing - rat housing is good but you'll need 1/4" mesh as the young ones start moving around very early and can easily escape through 1/2" mesh.

I house mine 1.3 or 1.4 in a 15 gallon tank, 1.2 or 1.3 in a 10 gal and they seem to do fine. Provide them with some kind of hide or nesting box, mine like 3" PVC T connectors. Nice tough PVC that can take a LOT of chewing, unlike the store bought soft plastic igloos and similar products.

They are very strong constant chewers so just make sure there is nowhere for them to chew an escape.

Thanks I adjusted them a little after readding your post. I now have them in a rubbermaid I made my self. plan on making a few more. The food thig will work fine I have 3 Quaker parrots. So I have millet all the time.

Well, millet is just a treat and supplement, you need good lab blocks for their staple diet.

Rubbermaids should be ok as long as there are no holes or ridges for them to get a hold of and chew through, and there is enough floor space. 24" x 12" or larger is recommended, though I've kept some in 10 gal tanks 20x10 and they bred fine.

Thanks.... one of the trios is in a 31 quart tub that I modified with 1/4 hardware cloth. I put a food hopper in it looks good. The other is still in the hd tub for now tell I get another tub made.
