Red Tails are Breeding!

vegasbilly Jul 28, 2007 10:57 PM

Hey all, Chris Harper you out there? I put the male in w/2 females and the response was immediate! I've often seen the aftermath of nocturnal courtship (total cage devastation) but this was my first eyewitnessed event. They were moving too fast to photo and ended up w/one pair locked up in the hide box. I left the other female in as the male was courting both. The other female is a grey morph w/a yellow head. Below are pics of the ones that bred today.

Congrats.
I never had much trouble getting Gonyosoma to breed. Egg husbandry is the tough part. Best of luck - they are terrific snakes.

Here's a pic of one of the "Sunburst" Indian Sand Boas. Line was developed by Dr. Rick Staub who gave me a pair as a wedding present!

Very cool. I have received snakes as a present a few times and have to say that makes them even sweeter. I got Southern Pines for Valentines Day from my wife in 1999. I also got Honduran Milks and Womas later on. Cool snake and a very nice gift. Good luck with everything Tom Stevens

Wow! My wife has yet to purchase any herps for me though she has agreed no reptile skin shoes, bags, or whatever shall be worn in my house! She did come up w/the suggestion that I wall in the 1 car part of out 3 car garage, add a mist system, and "replace all your cages so they look the same". Before she could retract or regain her sanity, I had the Barrs cages, Helix panels and controllers, and Pro-Mist system ordered. Contractor was framing the new wall in the next day! Below is a pic when about1/3 the cages were in, the other walls look about the same and I had custom cabinets and a work bench built as well. I sealed up the actual garage door and have my Spilotes in 4'x3'x3' cages stacked 3 high.

I've hatched out eggs successfully many times over the years. Here's a note, neonates eat much better at first if split brained pinks are left UP in the foliage, not on the ground! All my babies fed first this way and after a few feedings went on to feed anywhere in the enclosure. Initial pinks left on the ground were ignored.
