Pity Party

Stopped by a local pet shop this evening, and I was surprised to see a pretty BRB (as well as some nice boa constrictors) in the reptile section. I just stared at it for about 10 minutes, feeling sorry for myself. Why? Well, I made a deal with my wife (who is perfect in every way except that she, to put it mildly, does not share my passion for snakes) where I could get another one (had a BC and a BRB about 10 years ago)... once one of our other family pets kicks the bucket. Right now we have 1 St. Bernard, 1 cat and 1 friendly rat. Mickey the rat probably has a good 3-6 months left, while the dog and cat are only middle aged. Since I really like Mickey, the thought of slipping him a mickey in the middle of the night only briefly crossed my mind. So I'm stuck for now. Ok, I feel better for unloading that off my chest Oh, btw, if anyone feels sorry enough for me to send me an anery BRB, let me know. Seriously, I hope I can share some of my own pics soon.

you have four pets for like 5 minutes and give Mickey up for adoption to the snake but that prolly won't go over well but you can try that now or just wait for him to kick the bucket-just a thought but I'm kidding of course about the feeding him off way though

That was the first thing that crossed my mind. Not sure my kids would ever speak to me again, though, if Mickey went "missing" and my new boa had a large bulge in it's gut. Actually, I like the rat, he's a great pet. Lots of personality and very smart. If you don't have one as a pet, you should get one... just don't let it view "feeding time" for your other pets.

I do raise my own mice and I treat them like gold but their kidslol I wouldn't mind a rat though cuz I've been looking into raising some rats too but can't get the money together to complete my rodent breeding rack but in the next couple of months I will be all set. I do have a few mice that when I put my hand in the cage or tank they willingly try to crawl up my arm and I give them a break from trying to be humpedlol I have one male (black) a few black females and the rest are plain jane but I love the gray and brown ones but the spotted ones melt my hearth though. Hope everything works out for you and I'm sure it will and there is no other joy like having kids that's for sure

...just get a book on keeping pet rats, then get one(or two, they like being kept in pairs, same gendered pairs of course)!

They're like miniature dogs!

Maybe you can talk to her and let her know how much you really want another snake. Maybe you could do something for her that you really haven't wanted to, but she wants you to.

Maybe you could put the snake someplace where it wouldn't be in plain sight every time she walked into the house. Maybe put it into a corner. Do you have separate walk-in closets? Maybe you could put it in yours. Do you have an office in the house?

Maybe you can look her in the eye, tell her you are the man of the house and that you are getting a snake. And that's that. Then you'll have all the room you need for all the snakes you want, in your new apartment. Just kidding.

Best of luck

Thanks for the ideas, already tried the bribes and closet strategies. Haven't tried the ulitimatum thing yet, been married too long to take care of myself in my own apartment.

There's actually much more to the story. My last pet (6 ft. long Boa Constrictor that I had raised from a newborn) escaped his cage, and things ended up badly for him. He got injured when I was trying to get him out of the sleeper sofa couch where he was hiding. Given his escape was my screw-up, I don't mind compromising now. I can wait a few more months. I'll just drool over all the forum pictures until then.

Thanks,
Ed

sounds to me like you really need one and if you don't get one then something terrible might happen to you. that's just me... maybe tell her that a snake costs much less than prescription anti-depressants that you'll need for the rest of your life if you don't get a new rainbow friend?

just an idea or sneak it into your house and keep it hidden until someday she finds it and it's six feet long

Hmmm, haven't thought about threatening suicide. It would probably backfire, though. She's in the medical profession, so I'd probably end up in the psych ward at the local hospital. I appreciate the suggestion, though, it's definitely original!

Thanks,
Ed
