One of my Leopard tads and a couple of my cuban tads had some pretty bent tails. One of the Cubans tails literally was "U: shapped. It was looking like it was effecting his back legs as well. But once he morphed and absorbed his tail everything was fine! Just keep an eye on it and make sure that your lil tad is getting enough to eat. What are you feeding it and what is the water temp?

HBH frog and tadpole bites ,and spinach. I don't keep track of the water temp. what would the tempature have anything to do with it?

EllasMommie Aug 19, 2003 08:28 PM

Ok... stop offering the spinach. I was told that it is bad for tadpoles.

Water temps should be between 75-78 daytime and as low as 70 in the evening. Temps could have a bit to do with it if it gets too warm. The spinach could also. OR... it could simply be the way it is growing.

who told you spinach was bad for the tads? they are wrong. Look in this months isuue of reptile magazine it tells you how to care for albino bullfrigs from tad to frog and it says boled spinich is a staple food

Yeah and they also have Cranwells' horned Frogs in them marked Ornate Horned Frogs, there is a lot of incorrect information in those magazines. Spinach has some chemical in it that inhibits something in growth. I can't remember the names of the stuff, but thats why it's bad.

Nutrition - Tadpoles
Tadpoles have a high calcium requirement and in addition to their diet, absorb calcium through their gills and skin. Good nutrition and adequately hard water are essential for normal development. Iodine deficiencies can develop when amphibians are fed deficient or goitrogenic diets. This causes tadpoles to fail to metamorphose. Tadpoles fed spinach may develop oxalate calculi in the kidneys and die at the time of metamorphosis.

http://www.safe2use.com/poisons-pesticides/pesticides/permethrin/cox-report/cox.htm

Permethrin is toxic to honey bees and other beneficial insects, fish, aquatic insects, crayfish, and shrimp. For many species, concentrations of less than one part per billion are lethal. Permethrin causes deformities and other developmental problems in tadpoles, and reduces the number of oxygen-carrying cells in the blood of birds.

Permethrin has been found in streams and rivers throughout the United States. It is also routinely found on produce, particularly spinach, tomatoes, celery, lettuce, and peaches.

Spinach should not be used to feed tadpoles. You have done an excellent job of providing information to back that up!
