Req: Locality deserticola pics

FunkyRes Jul 29, 2007 02:26 PM

There seems to be a lot of variety in this sub.
If you keep locality specimens - I'd love to see the pics and notations on where they are from.

I think this will be the second P catenifer subspecies I acquire, and I'm trying to get an idea of what locality I want to pursue.

TIA,

Funky

There's a bit of a difference of opinions on exactly whether this snake is P.c. catenifer or deserticola or an intergrade of both, but it's from W. Lancaster where the natural ranges of 3 Gopher ssp converge (per californiaherps.com catenifer, annectens, deserticola).

The following pics are from a female from E. Lancaster that I collected last year on Father's Day. A couple of my friends also have snakes from this area, and the strange thing about them is that when you come across them in the wild they do not seem wary or frightened of humans @ all. I wish I could find John Steiner's pic of this, but last year, on the night that I collected this one, one found about 50 yards away actually came right up to my hands as I knelt in front of it trying to allow John to get a pic of it. Definitely the "tamest" wild Gophers I've encountered.

Jason Nelson (Envy Reptiles) has about 30 pics on his site of Great Basin Gophers. I found this small female in the Las Vegas area last year:
