Ivories hatched! Pics and a Question...

Amanda_Burke Jul 29, 2007 02:38 PM

Hi everybody...

We are really excited about these guys...we had a clutch of 12 eggs and 4 of the babies are white, although two are taking their sweet time coming out of the eggs. We breed boas and these are our first white balls ever, so we are thrilled!

They were produced by breeding a now proven female yellow-belly (we purchased her as a nice normal, but later suspected she was a yellow-belly) to her son, which is a yellow-belly/Vin Russo het Blue-eyed lucy.

You can see from these pictures that one of these is much cleaner than the other, and doesn't have the yellow stripe down it's back. Since we've never had these before, we are wondering if this is a normal variation in ivories, or if you guys think that this may be an ivory that is also a het lucy, making it cleaner and brighter white? Any opinions are welcome...we will defer to the experts! lol

Thanks for looking and for any opinions!

hey amanda, congratulations !
back on july 23rd i posted a question about crossing leucistics but didn't have the good fortune of having a supporting photo (or the good fortune of having the animals to produce the photo from !)
it does appear that you have some comingling of differing lucy gene lines , as those neonates are markedly different from each other.
i look foreward to the upcoming responses , maybe someone can shed some light on this quandry.
great job !

Hey Amanda,

Congrats! Ivories are really variable and can be anywhere from white to a real dirty white with lots of lavender and yellow. Those are real nice for sure!

In answer to your Question the only way I can see that to be possible is if you breed two Mojave’s ,Lesser’s , Butter’s that were het yellow Belly’s or some thing else that makes white snakes . It takes YB’s or Granites to make Ivory’s and a supper forms of Mojave’s ,Lesser’s , Butter’s ,EXT. to make Leucistic’s.

If it has a YB/Het Russo for a father , I would think that the clean looking one is a Ivory that ALSO has the visual Lemon (Het Russo) line in it as well.. The Russo gene could have "cleaned" up the Ivory , that is my theory as your saying the male father is a "double codom" .. If so that Ivory will make YB's , and double codom YB/Lemons with no normals when bred out to a normal... Cool stuff, Anthony McCain's Reptiles..

Those are some super nice Irovy's . And i think your right that the lighter colored and faint Yellow striped one is a het for Lucy. I was just talking to your Dad about my Blood litter and he was telling me about these,so I had to look and they are Awesome. If you get a chance to post the others when they come out of thier eggs that would be great I'd like to see them. I'll bet You a female poss het blood boa that those lighter Irovys are also het Lucys.hahahaha I need another het blood . If ones a male you'll know very soon...

That's the first 'stripe free' Ivory I've seen.
Even the Pastel Ivories still have the dorsal stripe.

It certainly looks different enough from its clutchmate to make me believe it IS an Ivory Het for Russo Leucy.

Ivory plus Pastel = Ivory with lots of extra yellows
Ivory plus Russo Het AKA 'Lemon' = Ivory with greatly reduced yellow.

So a gene called 'Lemon' wipes out most of an Ivory's yellow?
Interesting...

Congrats. Definitely a unique animal.

Do you have any photos of the YellowBelly/RussoLemon father?
I'd love to see how these two 'seemingly subtle' genes interact. Thanks....
