range maps for gopher snakes

sschind May 21, 2003 10:05 PM

I am looking for range maps for the different subspecies of gopher snakes. A customer brought in a couple of 2 month old babied that he said came from parents that were found in the "sacramento vally" of california, near the town of Yuma? Heres the kicker. He says his dad brought him a couple of adults around christmas time (wc no doubt) and that one day he woke up and found several babies in the cage. He claims not to have found any eggs. I know that gophers are not livebearers, but they do look like gophers. they have the 4 prefrontals and all. It is possible that he just found a couple of babies and was feeding me a line of BS. Anyway, I am trying to narrow down the possibilities based on what he told me. Also, Is it possible for gopher snakes from northern California to be active around Christmas time.

thanks

Steve Schindler

You can find range maps in a field guide, try the library or
large chain bookstores. I wouldn't think gophersnakes would be
active at that time/place but it might be possible to find one
sleeping underneath something
