My new leo has a messed up toe

cheshireycat Aug 19, 2003 01:06 PM

I bought her on the 16th at the Daytona show and it appears that she had some just-shed skin constricting part of one of her front toes. I put her feet in warm water for a bit and a little bit of skin came off and it looks to me like all isn't lost, but I've never dealt with this before.

Can someone tell me if this looks like it will fall off for sure or not? Also, if it falls off, since it's such a little piece, could it grow back even as scartissue? The messed up part is at a place where it wouldn't even look like she's missing it because it's only a little bit of the toe and would leave the toe even with the rest if that part came off, but I don't want her to be missing a nail or anything.

Thank you!

Betadine? I'm not familiar with that, care to enlighten me?

All I have that would be safe is neosporin, but I'll go pick up some Betadine.

I had the same problem a few weeks back. I bought a leo and the day I got him he was in shed and one of his toes looked just like that only a little darker on the end. I tried keeping him moist, and getting it off, but it was too late. When he shed that day the end of the toe came off with the shed. I put a little neosporin on it and kept him on paper towels till it healed. Just watch keep an eye on it and if it comes off keep it clean. It won't grow back, but it doesn't look so bad.

Thanks

I'll keep my fingers crossed that it doesn't happen, but if it does, well hey. Does another nail grow there, though? It would be a shame for it to not have a claw on that digit!

nope, no new nail. Make sure you keep her humid hide very moist, she may still have some problems shedding.

Well, I don't think I'll have the same problem in my house as the humidity here is pretty high. I have to do my best to keep it low enough for them, although I mist the underside of their hides on the warm side frequently.

The leo I've had since May hasn't had any problems shedding, and I'm kinda surprised that this new one had such an obvious problem happen with her and all, but c'est la vie.

Anyway, I'll do my best to prevent this from recurring, and it really stinks she won't get another claw there if this toe drops off.
