Unexpected gecko eggs

cabey Jul 30, 2007 03:48 PM

I was cleaning out my cage with three sub-adult females in it when I found two little white eggs. This caught me completely off guard as they have never been with a male. I didn't realize cresties did this. I assume they have to be blanks, right? Cresties aren't known to reproduce through parthenogenesis are they? One of the eggs is snow white and the other is starting to brown a bit. Kindof puzzled here. Any input is appreciated!

Side note. I was expecting to place a male with these three within the next couple of months. Do I need to do anything special or different with the laying female? I know egg laying can eat up energy and nutrients from a female. I just don't want to put any undue stress on her.

did you raise them yourself or acquire them from another source? if you raised them and are sure they have not been with a male, you can toss the eggs, as females will begin to lay infertile eggs when they reach a certain age. i keep a dish of pure calcium powder in my breeding females' tank so they can eat it when they feel like it. just make sure she gets a little extra food, that's about it.

I've had them since they were babies and they've definitely not been in contact with any males. My next question is, since she is already laying, should I put my male with her/them? I know egg production takes a lot out of them, so I'm not sure if I should wait it out or go ahead and go for it. I was really getting excited because I was about to start breeding them soon. Now I'm not sure what to expect. This is my first time doing this. Thanks in advance.

what is her age and weight? she should be at about 35 grams before being bred.

She's the right age/weight. She weighed 36.2 about 2.5 weeks ago. I'm just wondering if there's any reason to wait since she started laying blanks. She was showing signs of another round coming last night. Burrowing around a lot, etc. Do I let her get through this and fatten her back up before trying with the male, or do I just let them go at it?

no, you can go ahead and breed her now if you wish. you can leave her in with the male for a couple months and then separate them and let her rest and cool down over the winter. she may continue to lay eggs anyway though, my females did. 8 months without a male and still laying every month. just make sure she has plenty of pure calcium, either added to her food, or put some dry powder in a dish in the cage for her to eat as she feels the need. continue to monitor her weight and she should be fine.

Thanks a lot for your input. Puts my mind a bit more at ease.

no problem.

EDIT: my females stopped laying fertile eggs after 6 months, and one set of infertile eggs after that. so, you may want to separate your breeding groups 6 months or so before their cooling period, just my opinion.
