Does anyone here keep Carpet's???

trinacliff Aug 19, 2003 01:12 PM

I'm wondering because I've been getting conflicting information on whether or not it is best to keep them in a screen enclosure or tank/planted vivarium. I have some across a few people that keep them in tanks...and a few that keep them in screen enclosures. I believe since they like high humidity, that this is why some forgo the screen cages.

Does anyone know which would be better? Obviously, since these people are keeping them successfully (and breeding too, for that matter), either way must be fine...but I would like to know which is BEST for these guys.

Thanks so much!

I keep my carpet in a screen cage and have had him in it for about a year with no problems. They are pretty much standard just as panthers and veileds are with housing. I don't know if a tank is better/worse--but its probably best to play it safe by using a screen cage, since adult chameleons usually fare better in them in general anyway. I have never had a problem with him or other carpets having health problems due to low humidity in screen cages. Try emailing Forever Yours Reptiles. They seem to be doing really well with them and have lots of eggs on the way...so whatever they are doing would obviously work fine.

Thanks! I've actually been talking to them too, to find out how they keep theirs. I just was wondering what others did...

How long have you been keeping Carpet's? Do you breed them or just keep one or a few around for fun?

Thanks again!

Hi Kristen,

The Kammer's sell these chams and say that care is same as Panther's. Btw, did you get a male or female?

Giant Carpet Chams

Hey Lele...Giant Carpet's and Carpet's are different...the former is F. lateralis major and the latter is F. lateralis lateralis. Regular carpet's are smaller, and at least from what I've seen, a bit more colorful.

Thanks for the help though.

Oh....didn't know the distinction (you are becoming quite the little cham lady - LOL! Would their care be similar though?

When I'm interested in something, I try to find out as much as I can about them. I believe their care would be similar, but I am really curious as to why some keep theirs in tanks as opposed to screen cages...just wanted some personal opinions.

Take care!
