Swollen eyelids

drgrim775 May 21, 2003 10:12 PM

Ok, my girlfriend has a yellow belly slider who, as of about two hours ago has swollen eyelids. Well she called a vet before I saw the turtle and told him that the turtles eyes were bulging out but when I finally saw the turtle only its eyelids were swollen. It would not go into the water, just sit under his basking lamp and blink closing its eyes for a few seconds at a time. Have any of you experienced this and may know a cause, and a fix, for the problem? I read that vitamin A defiencies may cause this as well as cholorine. ANY help would be appreciated.

They have a great medical section with photographs that maybe able to help you determine the cause. I would say that it probably had something to do with diet unless of course a water dechlorinator is usually used and wasn't this time. It could also be an infection of some sort. Check out austinsturtlepage.com under medical. Did your girlfriend make an appointment with the vet? I think that's the best thing right now.
