I have never seen an egg start to pip. by the time I see it, it is already a slice.
i have seen an egg ooze at a spot. Maybe thats how the babies start to pip. By poking a hole that oozes, then slicing it.

I *almost* saw one pip this year.
There was no pip, I turned my head to attens to something else, and looked back at my eggs - and there was a good sized slit.

I did see an alligator lizard egg pip last year - the egg tore like a zipper with bubbly egg white pussing out as the egg slit. It happens very fast.

Don't know what the red dot is - but I did see what appeared to blood on some of the pips this year, I assume from vessels that had been attached to the embryo - or possibly from the egg tooth.
