rat snake eats upside down

reptileland22 Jul 31, 2007 08:36 AM

Hello everyone my husband and i just rescued a red rat snake shes about 2ft long and we fed her a pinkie today and she turns all the way upside down when she eats... The owner before us had her in a small tank feeding her hoopers and everytime he picked her up he thought it was so cool to flick her in the face to make her strike so i was wondering if anyone has ever seen a snake turn upside down when it eatsvand what it maybe?
Thanks for the help

Doesn't mean the snake will do that every time, but yes, this is not all that uncommon. A ratsnake is cabable of capturing and swallowing prey while clinging to a tree or structure above ground. They can contort pretty well.
