so i forgot if i had told you guys or not, but i didn't think i could fall any harder for variable bush vipers, but i did. I actually got to see three in person last weekend, two were sleeping , but one was just sitting there staring at me. I fell in love all over again! i am seriously contemplating moving to a state where you can at least get a venomous permit (can't even get a permit in CO) or maybe living my (and i guess all of our dreams) of becoming a real herpetologist and going to africa (and the surrounding areas) to study squams.

...don't do it! I am strongly against the keeping of venomous snakes in private collections. If you get bit, and there's ALWAYS a chance of getting bit by any snake, consider yourself screwed. Antivenom is NOT easy to come by when it comes to exotic snakes such as bush vipers. It has happened where people have gotten bit, and the antivenom had to be shipped from another, far-away state or even from another country. The result was a near-death experience that isn't worth the trouble.

So please, enjoy bush vipers at a zoo, not within the walls of your home.

yeah, once i illegally bought an egyptian false cobra (mildly venomous, bite described as being painful but only as damaging as a scorpion) never got bit or anything, i took a lot of precautions. but then i decided that it was just too risky to have one, because if he got out and hurt someone, then the police would undoubtably just kill him there. so that isn't fair to my poor neighbor or to the poor snake. so i sold him to a breeder. that's when i decided that i will never keep hots, i am just dreaming, mostly dreaming of going to africa. (i know it was stupid to buy him, but everyone does stupid things, and that was my stupid thing)

Scott,
..For a young fella you are looking pretty rough. You might want to take better care of yourself.

as sad as it makes me i have to agree. while they are great looking snakes it's just not worth the risk to you and the people around you. but it is sad because they are some very cool snakes.
