coluberking25 Jul 31, 2007 12:11 PM

...he can still completely conceal himself in a 40 gallon breeder tank! I didn't see him at all yesterday!

...I don't have that program, but I have this handy little gadget called a tape measure. Works like a charm!

Since snakes have to be coiled to move (slither or w/e) they generally dont like getting perfectly straight, the almost allways force themselves to have a little bit of bend to them, so its hard to get an acurate measurement on any of my snakes, thats my experience anyhow.

...I have no trouble stretching them out. Yes they do coil a little, but it's not enough to give me a horribly inaccurate measurement. I can easily determine how much more to add on to the reading.

What has worked for me a couple times is to first open up a tape measure and lock it so it doesn't snap back in. Lay it on the floor where you have some room so it stretches out. Put the snake down near it, mine usually stretch fairly straight when they are cruising on an open floor. Then I'll take a picture of the whole scene. You can usually get a pretty good idea of the length of the snake.

Granted, I have only done this a couple times, but it worked fairly well for me. It's not extremely accurate, but you can get a pretty close measurement. It's at least easier than trying to use the string method on a coiled or wiggly snake.

I have always used the snake’s sheds which normally come out in full to measure the snake. Or another simple trick is using a length of rope/string from tip to tip if the snake is coiled just run the string/rope along its back bone, note the length of the rope with your hands or a small piece of tape then measure the rope.

...they're still a little off, as the snake is longer than the skin it just shed.

i saw the rope technique used to measure anacondas. it works rather well

actually the problem with measuring shed skin is that the skin stretches when it comes off the snake and is much longer than the actual snake. i've heard it can be up to 10% longer then the snake actually is.

one time I had a shed from a brb that was in the 2 foot range and I promise you that the shed was at least 3 feet but I was not high or anything when this happened if you were wondering but it a lot longer than my snake though
