Should I waste my time and gas ?

Eby Jul 31, 2007 03:15 PM

I've got a SERIOUS itch to go looking for prairie rattlers, hognose, and maybe some toads. It is probably to cool and wet (low 70's dipping to 60's and scattered rain in my target area), but I STILL want to go. This particular grassland area is new to me and I'm excited about spending more time there.

Someone please talk some sense into me. Or, if you think it might pay-off, give me a nudge and someone to blame if I get skunked.

Hey Eby,

Hows it going man? i am headed down to a secret location "KM Rd" tonight, the weather looks to be getting a break, there, head south east if you head anywhere, the weather is bad where you want to go, then hunt cover, check culverts, look on the walls for lizards. As far as road cruiseing, i dont think it will produce in those conditions, mabey some garters and toads, but not much else, if you want to head south join up with me mabey?

Thanks,
Herptophile

Are you going the SHHH(Secret Hognose Heaven Highway)?

BRhaco Jul 31, 2007 08:05 PM

If you don't mind seeing toads, then go! Also, since I know where you're going, let me say that both splendida and celaenops have been seen there-and both species often don't seem to mind a little rain and cool temps!

For further motivation, here's a pic of a gravid prairie taken at that spot in June...

Radar and weather reports suggested a considerable risk of heavy rain. I would have tried if the only precip risk was drizzle.

I'll try another day (soon)

sorry i didnt get your message in time, i looked at the radar also, and called Herpo, and he gave me the run down of the weather all arround me while i was on the road, and i opted to head north west to Orla, and TSSSR road (The Super Secret Splendida Road) there i caught the following animals: 0.1 coach whip, nice banding, tan color, and viscious....a lizard that looked like a gold tegu, i will have to show you pictures, its very neat and bites like a rabid bull dog....5 night snakes, awsome pretty guys, left where i found them....1 long nose, some insectavorious bats (ha ha, i have a bat catching method now, it works awsome....BTW they BITE HARD) saw coyotes, TMTC deer, a bobcat/house cat cross, that was awsome looking, a badger, some silky pocket mice, some K-rats, some HUGE great plains toads, and some texas toads, and a few couches spade foot, left where i found them, TMTC tarantulas, it was 80*@ 2am on the road, awsome herping, lots of action, many things moveing that werent listed, like Virdis, Atrox, a greenish atrox, and so forth. no Edwardsi, or anything neat like that...sunday and monday will be awsome, good weather, good wind...headed out then...

did you find any of those rare, hard to find, locality glossys??

Herptophile Aug 01, 2007 11:45 AM

Actually i have 1.1 of the orange phase glossy that i have had for some time, i would warn you though they are EXTREAMLY agressive. BUT they eat F/T or live or anything, and are breedable, i plan on breeding them, or my buddy does, but at this point with is bloodies hands, i think he would just be happy to eigther trade with someone, or give them away. They are gorgious animals, and i think very worthy of a breeding project, there is something weird in there genetics thats for sure...

thanks for the heads up on their attitudes, and keep the road to yourself or the collectors will be there looking for those beauties!

Eby Aug 01, 2007 11:03 AM

No problem. Sounds like you had a great time. We'll have to connect up some other time, hopefully soon.

Sounds fun. I sent you an email thru KS. Let me know if you get it.

No problem with protecting your secret spots. I fully agree with the need to protect such places from public knowledge.

Eby,

I havent gotten your e-mail, the two easiest ways to get ahold of me are through my e-mail Herptophile@yahoo.com, and my cell phone 432-634-0248. By the way....tonight looks awsome for Iraan, cloud cover @ 77% will block out the moon nicely, winds SSE @ 5-9 MPH = lots of silkey pocket mice, and banneri on the move, lepidus will be cruiseing, projected temps @ 10pm of 78*F local temps will be MUCH warmer, up to 10*F warmer due to the rocks slowly releaseing the heat from all day....and i got a company gas card, nice perk huh?

Sounds tempting, but a little out of driving range for me (at least tonight). We will have to do that sometime when I'm heading to Midland for business or shopping.

I'll send you an email in a bit.

Herptophile Aug 01, 2007 02:44 PM

i live in Odessa, and i would do the driveing....company truck, company gas, and my company is WELL aware of what i do as a hobby, and supriseingly suportive, actually helping me gain access to private lands all over texas and new mexico....its pretty neat, however i kiss alot of butt....mow laws, fix house stuff, work there oil leases, help with dinner parties....all for the use of a guilt free gas card....oh well, its worth it!
