hopefully you got the answer since i dont dare ask on the dum forum since it hasnt moved in months lol but i know you got atleast one dum when it comes to probing how deep do males and females go in dums or can you tell stricly by spurs in them? i am looking at some juvies and one probed bout 5 scales and other bout 6 what you think some exact numbers would be great. im just getting into this whole boa world

I would say they are both female....but anything more than 4 scales is questionable.

Males usually probe 9-12 deep. Usually 12

females 4-5.... usually 4

6 is a very tough # to call.

problem is I have not probed a lot of these snakes. Plus, I also used Richard Ross's data as a reference as well.

be negligible in my opinion, Dumerils males usually probe deep.

There was this guy Jason if i remember who had a site basic Dums, he doesn't breed them any more but if you could somehow look him up, I bet he would have some worthwhile data for you.

I remember when Jason was just getting started with Dums. He used to chat at one of the reptile chat sites I used and he was a nice guy. I also think he got out of the Dumerils Boas. I have only probed a few Dums. I have heard that there are a fair amount of them that probe 6 to 8 scales deep and so are difficult to sex. Both sexes have short muscular tails and young ones are hard to sex by looking at spurs or palpating the tail for hemipenes. On the ones that probe to intermediate depth you might try a slightly thinner probe.

I do have two dumerils. They are 15 years old. They have not been bred in 6 years. They are a viable pair though. What I mean is, they are not "too old" to breed. I did not buy most of the snakes I have for "breeding projects". I have been studying them my entire life, but have to admit, the reproductive biology and it's results can be quite rewarding!!(monetarily as well)

the reason I got the Dumerils was because I wasn't allowed to get them. ( I love when women try to make decisions in my life, BTW, I am now divorced lol )

lol nice i was holding my buddies "tame dum today and it was eh 5 foot and heafty size well it must have been stressed from bein in a rubbermaide at the swap on sunday and all night over at some1 house till got home to original owner and yeah she got me slow and steady and held on for a bit not what i thougth woulda felt like from that biug of a girl. this pic was takin a hour after the fact. and all my snakes are pets not breeders just get to breed once of age and only at max every other year only problem is i slow grow my snakes so somtimes breeding dont come till 4 years or so down the road lol.

FRoberts Aug 01, 2007 01:08 AM

are some of the strongest snakes I have ever kept. I also slow grow my snakes as well, the reason I do not breed them more, is more about laziness then anything else. It is not as easy for me to sell them as it used to be. But I am a partner in a small business and when we have more snakes capable of breeding, doing shows will seem monetarily desirable. At this time it is just a hassle to get a table with all the new rules and reg's they are enforcing these days.

I am currently most interested in breeding my lucy texas rat to my Mark Bell lavender texas rats, wondering if I will get just double het's or if the Lavender is het for lucy, the lucy is definitely not het for lavender. You do not see the Lavender gene very often as of yet in the hobby.

lavender:

lucy:

so I guess that is a "project" after all. lol!

Funny, I have snakes that are worth 10 times what these are worth, yet I AM EXTREMLEY excited about breeding these. I LOVE AMERICAN RAT SNAKES!!!

hey who doesnt like the money but that isnt always the reason for breeding htem thats just the bonus that comes with it lol. all my money as little as it is that comes from breeding goes right back to the reptiles better cages more food maybe some new snakes etc
