Tank w/ big Under Tank Heater

K_House Aug 01, 2007 12:12 AM

A neighbor gave me a slightly used tank (in perfect condition) that has an under tank heater that covers literally 3/4 of the bottom of the tank. IMO, the UTH should take up less than 1/2 the bottom of the tank. I would really like to use this tank though! I have 3 options -

1. I have a pink-toed Tarantula that would love a larger tank - could she live in that tank if I put 2 or 3 inches of peat moss so she's not too close to the heat source?

2. A friend is adopting a Leopard Gecko - would that tank be too warm for the gecko?

3. Not use the tank with the current UTH.

I agree with you that for the species listed, 3/4 of the floorspace heated is too much.

You can peel off those heaters. I've done it a handful of times. Just do a little at a time. Then use a heater of more appropriate size.

Another idea is to get a smaller heater and adhere it right onto the larger heater (and obviously do not plug in the larger heater.)

Or get a smaller heater that would fit in the exposed area?
