babies not eating?

laurarfl Aug 01, 2007 09:28 AM

When do you get concerned about babies not eating? I have 10 hatchlings, they hatched between 7/15 and 7/18. There was one late hatcher who hatched on the 20th. Everyone has shed and most have eaten at least once, some twice. I'm feeding live and F/T pinkies. I have 2 littles who shed on the 23rd and 24th but haven't eaten a thing. I've even tried a brained pinky, but to no avail. They are hydrated and I've seen them drinking. Temps are 80-82, small containers, no real gradient. Next step?

I'm not a breeder and I've only had one pair of small babies. SO I'm not the most experienced person around.

It's basically the same thing as braining, but while the pinky is still frozen, cut it in half length wise, then thaw it out. That might work out. More stuff to produce more smell.

Someone here last year(?) got a bunch of non feeders from a breeder. They could not get them to eat for anything. This person got them in the mail and just about all of them started to eat, if I remember correctly. It could have been the temp differences/ fluctuations. Maybe it was the stress of being in a box for a day or so. Different scents in the new cages.

Maybe you could change the caging around. drop the temps some for a little while, or raise them. Or stress them out a little and take them for a car ride, try feeding after? Kidding about the car ride, but if all else fails.........just don't leave them in there alone, temps will get way too hot.

The same thing happened to a friends snakes for breeding. They wouldn't hook up for him at all. He sold them to someone who drove them back home (6-7 hr drive) and within the week, they all paired up first try.
Best of luck
Rob

One thing I have noticed is that some snakes just don't like being put in deli cups to feed. While most of my babies don't mind, I do have a couple who won't eat in a deli cup. If I put the pinks on a paper towel in their container they snatch them up. Just a thought.

Thanks for the suggestion. I didn't exactly take them for a drive, but I moved them to my garage for a few hours. By evening they were nice and warm and active. They were ready to be tease fed and grabbed the little F/T pinkies out of my hand...literally.
