sneezing snake

balisong Aug 01, 2007 10:48 AM

My grey-banded kingsnake has been sneezing for about 2 days. I noticed that he started his sneezing a few hours after eating. He also has not defecated and he usually does that 2 days after eating. This is day 3. How can help my snake?

Is he going to shed? This happens often just before a shed.

Also, defecation usually occurs just after a shed, which could account for the delay. Although, expecting a defecation exactly 2 days after feeding every time is a bit, well, unrealistic.

Yes, he is getting ready to shed, but he's never sneezed before shedding. Also I forgot to mention this earlier when he sneezes it is not a strong sneeze, his body does not jump nor does his back arch up. There is no mucus, he is not salivating, and his mouth is not open. Should I still raise his cage's temperature?

You can raise the temp, as snakes often seek warm temps before a shed. The sneezing however is caused by loosening skin in the nostril area, not by a virus. Unless your snake really is sick, but I would guess not.

I've had many snakes wheeze a week or so before shedding only to be fine as soon as they shed.
