Accurate way to measure uth temp?

indyherps Aug 01, 2007 11:56 AM

Ive had my leo for 4 years now and have never had a problem, I've always used a UTH but have never had anyway to accurately measure the temperature. I've just been putting down 2 or 3 layer of tile then feel with my hand to make sure it wasn't to hot, is there anyway besides using a laser thermometer to measure the temperature of the actual tile accurately?

The best way is an infrared thermometer, sorry. You can get them for $25. They (the $25 ones) are well accurate enough for meaningful data. I finally bought one, and it has been indispensible since. Makes quick temp checks so easy, even on the animals themselves w/o disturbing them. Much more meaningful data than even just the basking spot.

Other than that, those stick-on aquarium thermometers will give you an idea, but you have to lay them on the tile and allow a few minutes before reading. They are not as accurate but are good enough to tell you if the tile is too hot.

My advice to you is this - if you plan on keeping herps from now on, get an infrared thermometer. There really is no better tool for this application.

I absolutly agree. The people at Pro Exotics are fantastic, and they provide a great product. Get the PE-2, and I suggest getting the case for it as well. Wonderful folks, can really help you out. They're cheaper than the actual UTH's. Good luck.
