Revisiting an old problem

niddy Aug 01, 2007 12:03 PM

Hey gang I'm sure your sick of hearing about my weird lil gal Bindy's problems, but I'm perplexed (yet again).

I've posted before that she hasn't been eating much. She's never eaten greens, and gave up crickets about 3 months ago. She WAS also not very active, but as suggested, I added more light last month, and it's made all the difference. She was also a lil scardey cat (dragon), but not handling for a few weeks solved that.

She's now more active than ever. She'll get down about every half hour and "prowl," and I let her out every day to explore. She seems very healthy (has a lot more meat on her than lots of females I see in the classifieds).

That said, she doesn't eat. Like I said, she's never eaten greens and she no longer will eat crickets. I've tried every worm there is. She's now only eating 2-3 mealworms every 3-4 days. (no exaggeration) I give her drinks from a dropper daily.

Soooo, how on earth can she be as healthy as she seems??? Any thoughts? How worried should I be?

Thanks everyone,
Jeni and Bindy

Have you ever tried giving her a commericial diet, like repcal
all my dragons love it they dont seem to like any of the other brands.

Well lo and behold! I just came downstairs and Bindy was chowing down on GREENS!

HOLY COW!

*Does a happy dance*

The comercial diet thing...I have the Wardly brand and keep a bowl of it in her cage, but she's never touched it.

Thanks guys!

Ok I will! Can I get in in a petstore or do I need to order it?

Hi Jeni!
Glad to hear the good news that the extra lighting and timeout from handling has helped Bindy. Also glad to hear she's finally started eating greens.

I suggest offering her nothing but greens for several days, not crickets, worms, etc..., just greens. If you've been dusting her crickets most of the time, after several days I'd offer her a few crickets without dust. I would also suggest getting your crickets from a different supplier.

Depending on what crickets are fed, they can taste different and some animals are finicky about that. Its not a very common problem but it has been noted by a few experienced keepers.

I'm in FL on vacation & haven't checked my messages in awhile, so if you've tried e-mailing me and haven't gotten a response, now you know why.

Catch ya later!

I forgot to say, "forget about the commercial diet stuff."

No offense to you, "royal645," I just persoanlly don't believe that the commercial diets are as wholesome, nutrituous, as live prey and fresh veggies & fruits. Plus, I've never heard of a beardie that wasn't started on it at an early age ever taking to it.
