DAILY SOUTHTOWN (Chicago, Illinois) 02 August 07 Would-be snake thief tries to use getaway pants (Isaac Wolf )
Blame the shifting bulge in this teen's pants on a slithering serpent.
A thief trying to swipe a baby Brazilian rainbow boa from an Orland Park pet store shoved the tiny snake in his trousers before leaving Chicago Reptile House, according to authorities.
At about 2 p.m. on July 25, Devon Wennlund, 18, of Downers Grove, took the month-old snake from its tank. An observant customer saw Wennlund put the animal in his pants pocket.
The snake, about 12 inches long, was being sold for $165.
"It's just a little thicker than a pencil," store owner Brian Potter said.
After Wennlund slithered out of the Humphrey Drive store, Potter gave chase. He caught the would-be snake stealer sitting in his car.
"The snake was crawling out of his pocket," Potter said. "He gave me an 'Oh, I'm an idiot' apology."
Potter took the snake back into the store.
Wennlund did not return a call to comment. He faces a charge of retail theft and is scheduled to appear in court next month.
