Surefire way of getting Rocky to eat?

coluberking25 Aug 02, 2007 02:28 PM

So Rocky hasn't eaten for two weeks now...because I'm trying to make him hungry enough to eat thawed out rats. You guys think two weeks of no food will get him on thawed out rats? Thanks in advance for opinions/help!

of course not columbians dont eat frozen thawed only brazilians do lol jk just makin up for no dave. But i would say try but when thawing dont put it in water and if you do leave it in a plastic bad with no air in it closed tight. the water washes away alot of the scent thats how i got one of my ball pythons taking frozen thawed. let it thaw in a bag in the fridge for awhile then after it was all nice and soft left it in bad closed tight put in hot water let it get warm and offered at night and sure nough right away she took it and wouldnt touch a f/t before then and bouy did i offer i hate feeding live lol

Scott,
...Make sure your frozen rats are fairly fresh and have not been freezer burned or taken on any non rat odors. AND, make sure they are warmed up above 100 degrees when you offer them. AND, look at the snake's environment. You may have the temperature a degree or two in the wrong direction of what the snake prefers and that can make all the difference in whether they will eat or not. You might also try letting the snake enjoy hiding and not being handled for several days and then put the rat in without bothering the snake.
Good luck,
Jeff

....that I have not fed him the past two weeks on my own will. The first week it was because he was in shed, and he doesn't eat while getting ready. The second week I just thought would be good to skip so I can finally get him on thawed out rats.

As for making sure their temps are above 100 degrees.....what would be a good way for that? Hot water from a faucet, microwave?

I use hot water, do not let them sit in the water too long and or use temps above 105, if you do the rats will literally fall apart or when you use the tongs the snake will pull the rat and leave you with one type of body part or another and or you could also have a blowout in the belly region, stinky I may add, yuck

Scott,
..I thaw and warm rodents by placing them in one of the Sterilite shoe boxes and floating the box in a tub of very hot water. You can use the thaw setting on a microwave but you have to time it just right or you will make a MESS.
