northeastern brown dekays snake

psi_chick Aug 03, 2007 12:16 AM

i wasn't sure where to put this, so i'm sorry if it's in the wrong place.

a friend's snake just had babies and he's offered me one of his little ones. he said that they are northeastern brown dekays snake. i have not had much luck trying to find this species online and as such can't really get too much info on them in terms of housing, feeding, etc. does anyone know about these snakes and their care?

thanks in advance for any help you can offer

i just searched "dekay's snake" on google & i got a bunch of links:

http://www.lakeeureka.eureka.lib.il.us/amphibiansreptiles/dekaysnake.html

from what i briefly read, it seems that they stay small and eat worms, slugs, and snails

they get 8-15inches & you could probably keep it in a 10gallon with a lid.

good luck! hope this helps

Brown Snake

Storeria dekayi (9-13", up to 20"

Adult Brown Snake

True to its name, the brown snake is dark brown to grayish brown in color. It generally has a broad light stripe bordered by dark spots down the back. The belly is pink or buff colored, sometimes with rows of small black spots. As a juvenile it has a light ring around the neck. However, unlike the ringneck snake, the brown snake has keeled scales.
