Where are the Chain Kings?

Rivets55 Aug 03, 2007 01:07 PM

Just wondering if anyone here still works with classic Eastern Kingsnakes aka Chain Kings. If so, how 'bout some pics?

Cheers

JD

I've got a couple of Virginia Beach, Va. and Chesapeake, Va.
pairs that I'm working with. My camera sucks, so no decent photos. I'm working on getting some nice photos of this seasons clutches though. Here's an old, lousy, photo of one of my Virginia Beach males.

Phil, that is sweet! Derek

Top one is a BIG Calvert County, MD male. Peter Jolles, Kevin C. and myself found this guy while herping. Middle is a Northern MD male. Bottom is Greenville, SC.

Derek, how big is your Greenvilles now?

Hey Todd,

I'm on travel right now, so I can't measure them. I got a second female from Jolles not long after I got the pair, and she was quite a bit larger than my pair. Derek

reason I ask is because my female has surpassed her sibling brother by enormous strides. I know they are individuals, but sometimes it is surprising how far they can differ, even on the same regimen.

I bred those Greenville, SC locale Eastern Kings for a few years. Without a doubt they were the best feeding Eastern Kingsnake babies I have ever worked with.

Good luck.

Peter J., Kevin C. Ryan Travis, Mark Hardie and I hit St. Mary's, Calvert and Charles counties this spring. Ryan found one eastern in Charles Co. and Peter found a couple in Calvert Co.. No luck for me though. I'm moving to D.C. in January, so I'm sure I'll be spending a lot more time herping in those areas.
Nice lookin' Kings. Thanks for the photo's.

Are any of you working with the amel gene in eastern chain?

One guy on another forum is, he's outcrossing his amel with WC to strengthen the L g getula "look and feel" of the amel line.

I'm curious how many are doing that, given that some have complained they aren't quite right (from the nigra influence the amel gene probly came from) and some suggestion that the line has some genetic issues resulting in young death of some of them.

Hopefully outcrossing will fix the first issue, and should reduce the second issue.

Will Still was working with the albino eastern... and using his GA easterns to outcross them and make the albinos look better.

He sold off that project to a person that used to come on these forums regularly... I don't know if he still does though. And I don't know what he has done with the line.

I personally don't think they are pure.
To each his own.
You won't see me working with them.

I like the way they look naturally. Something about their blackness, and how well the white or yellow chains go against the black. Derek

Here's a pic of one I caught in June 2007 in Maryland (and then she laid a clutch of 9 eggs twelve days later) -

Here's another I caught in May 2007 in Maryland (she laid 18 eggs for me after I caught her) -

Below is a male I caught last July 2006 at the same spot as the two above females -

2.1 miles from the site that I caught the three above snakes I found these two small juvies in May 2007 - one week apart from each other and both under plywood boards.
1st up - the female:

2nd - the male:

I am gonna breed the heck out of my Maryland Eastern Kings (I retained 2.2 of the wild caught snakes) over the next several years --------

Ditto!

Black and White Easterns look so elegant and formal - like they are wearing a Tux.

Thanks to all who replied with great pix.

I get frustrated with the classifieds - hypo-this, het-for-that, apricot-whatnot. Not a single Chain King to be found.

all I got is this spoiled-rotten, ill-temperd spledida.

Looks are SOO deceiving.
She HISSES, BITES, MUSKS, POOPS and PEES all the while thrashing about so as to spread as much Joy as possible.

I call her Psycho...

Eats like, well...like a Kingsnake.

Here she is in a moody pose.
