they are intergrades in my opinion, but if mixed with a diamond python they are hybrids.
I base this on my opinion that carpets are a separate species and distinct from diamond pythons all together.
Morelia spilota spilota = Diamond Python
In my opinion, Carpets should be given there own specie status, but they are currently classified as Morelia spilota ssp.
Depending on which you are referring to....
examples:
Morelia spilota cheynei = Jungle Carpet / Atherton Tablelands
Morelia spilota imbricata = Southwestern Carpet
Morelia spilota mcdowelli = Coastal Carpet
Morelia spilota metcalfei = Inland Carpet
Morelia spilota variegata = Northwestern Carpet
I am in between several hypothesis on their proper classification.
But at this time I am leaning towards some older works that classifies them as the following:
Morelia spilota spilota = Diamond Python
Morelia variegata variegata = Carpet Pythons(nominate form)
Morelia variegata cheynei
Morelia variegata imbricata
Morelia variegata mcdowelli
Morelia variegata metcalfei
To me, at this time, anything looks better then classifying them as a Morelia spilota ssp.
Further recognition as full species may be warranted in my opinion such as :
Morelia cheynei cheynei
Morelia imbricata imbricata
Morelia mcdowelli mcdowelli
etc...
But at this time I feel that the nomenclature should read:
Morelia spilota spilota = Diamond Python
Morelia variegata variegata = Carpet Pythons ( nominate form )
subspecies of variegata =
cheynei, imbricata, mcdowelli, and metcalfei respectively.
One example of a hybrid JCP & Diamond in my collection:

a few shots of some JCP in my collection...need beter pics...

I also have a beautiful male coastal that I have not taken any pictures of as of yet, so many snakes, so little time lol....
Interesting read......
