Baby boxie question

babyboxielover Aug 04, 2007 06:45 PM

Where would i be able to find them in the wild? Just for pictures, I wouldnt take them. I live in Virginia, so if anyone knows a good place, or just in general like a specific type of soil or where they would be in the habitat or what time of day or year would be best please let me know. Its a photography project for school that I need to hand in as soon as school starts. i need to know everything. If they come out during the rain, what time they hatch, if they would stay buried or under logs, ect. Please also let me know if maybe theres a way to attract them with plants or smells or something. i really shouldnt have put it off this long...

Baby box turtles are pretty much impossible to just go out and find in the wild. You just have to be lucky to come across one. They stay hidden in leaf litter in the woods for the first few years of their lives to avoid being eaten by predators. I've never come across a hatchling box turtle in the wild and I've been looking for 40 years.

I've seen a hatchling Gopher Tortoise twice (because they are so noisy- otherwise you'd never see those either!) Never a Box Turtle. Good luck!
