little info on shipping and ice packs

lucas123 Aug 04, 2007 10:24 PM

i was just looking for some advice from people that ship dragons. i know how to do it i have done it plenty of time in the past but i have never had to do it in the heat we have been having.
well i ship in the standard boxes we all use the 12 x 9 x 6 Styrofoam shipping boxes. the way i ship is place a baby in the deli cup with the screen lid then place in the box with shredded paper to keep the container from bouncing around in the box.
ok so here is what i need some info on.
i was wondering at what temps should your start to think of using ice packs?
if using ice packs should i place it to the side of the cup or on top of the cup?
should i punch holes in the box or leave it alone?
what size should i use if i need to use 8 oz or the 16 oz?
thanks for the help

The link below describes how to use both hot and cold packs when shipping reptiles. Just have to scroll down to where you see pictures of the cold/hot packs to read the bit about how to package the cold packs.

Though the link also shows a relatively small box as you use as well, on other forums here other shippers brought up an important factor I had not considered before.

Basically I had mentioned receiving two snakes packaged in a huge box (something like 2' cubed sized box)which I felt was really large for two deli dishes commonly used to ship small lizards or baby corn snakes. The point these breeders made was that a large box holds a constant temperature longer, than a smaller box..even when insulated. This is a very good point so a bigger box than you are using may be a good ideal to decrease chances of overheating/underheating occurring to the reptiles you ship.

In really extreme weather conditions, it is always safer to not ship. To wait instead to more milder temperatures to reduce chance a reptile is exposed to extreme temperatures during shipping.

Good question I was wondering myself what would be considered hot enough to put ice packs in with the dragons.
