Anybody know where to purchase pvc for cage building?
depending on where you live i would first look in the phone book under plastic and then in the sheet or manufacturing subdivision. If there's nothing locally you'll have to ship it in, which can get really expensive especially if your not ordering enough to balance out the cost. A good place to start is www.usplastics.com. Another option is to look under sign makers in the yellow pages, the only downside is they tend to only carry the thinner sheets
The large cage manufacturers get pallets of plastic and for that matter all the other accessories to build the cages. They are able to save money buy buying and shipping in bulk and then pass that savings on to you. I happen to live within 5 miles of all the supplies i would need to build my own cages and for a 4'x2'x1' i would end up saving about $75 dollars per cage. Keep in mind I also have access to all the expensive tools i would need to build said cage. This is also not including my labor and the huge cleanup of sawing and routing plastics.
I applaud you for trying cause after i did all my research I've puchased all my smaller cages dilligently off craigslist and am in the proccess of building a very large cage 6'tx4'wx2'd for a spilotes i'm picking up using these www.industrialerectorset.com i happen to have several years before its gonna need this cage as shes just a cbb baby.... unless i decide to buy her a mate earlier lol!
I hope this gives you some ideas and some thing to think about and feel free to ask me any other questions regarding this.
Nate
Another place to find PVC is at the companies who supply petrochemical plants. My father is a manager of one such business and they sell sheets of PVC, plexi, Lexan (polycarbonate), fiberglass grate and numerous types/sizes of plastic pipes and fittings. Shops like this can fabricate things out of the various plastics using plastic cements & welding, heat guns, etc. I've seen them make some amazing things out of plastic pipe and sheets.
It might take a bit of searching to find a business of this type, but you may find it helpful.
Thank you for your input. Yes the material is expensive, and more difficult to get then the wood products, but i figured since most cage builders were going to it, that it was worth looking into. I enjoy make cages that look more like nice cabinet furniture then simple wood boxes, but some cages for display and some for simple housing has been working for me since high school woodshop. lol
I have an account with a company that has warehouses in a few other cities. What city/state do you live in? I've purchased PVCx for as low as $48 for a 4x8 sheet.
