Gopher Tortoise Legality

enkidu Aug 05, 2007 10:57 PM

although I would assume that Gopher tortoises are illegal to keep as pets inside of their native range, are they legal to keep anywhere in the U.S. I have heard of gopher tortoises being sold as pets in the 80s but have not been able to find any current information on the legality of their keeping. I've been wondering about this for a while so any help would be appreciated.

They are protected in each state where there are native populations and each state will have it's own rules. In many states they can be kept by private individuals within the confines of those rules. What state are you asking about?

I am wondering about Washington State.
