Can my kingsnake have 2 mice for lunch?

fuel925 Aug 06, 2007 04:32 AM

I have a 3 year old Californian Kingsnake. At the moment he has 1 mouse per week, but after he's eaten the mouse he will be quite active around his feeding area, as though he's looking for more. Also, I fed him a couple of days ago and after he had eaten the mouse he mistook my finger for a mouse, and clamped his jaws around my finger and the rest of his body around my arm. He stayed clamped onto me like this for a few minutes until we read on the internet that cold water will get a snake to release its grip.

My point is, it seems that he is still hungry after 1 mouse, would he be able to have 2 a week, one after the other? I'm not sure hes quite ready for the next size up yet.

Thanks for your help!

Yeah,And a Sm Rat for Dinner after the big lunch , my critters only get One except a few and my Fl. Kings would empty my freezer and or rodent colonies given the chance. i also have one king my boy and i call Psycho cause' if you get NEAR his tray he is bouncing off the walls and sharpening his teeth on the plastic walls ,actually he is just a bottom-less pit.

I think everybody has a "Psycho" in their collection! Mine got his name because when the smell of mouse was around he was jumping at anything and everything until something landed in his mouth. Unfortunately, he died recently, but I'm working up a male with the same vicious feeding reponse!

Most of my adult kings eat 2 or 3 mice a week.

A couple of mine rarely take 2 but sometimes they do.

If after one mouse your snake is still active he's trying to tell u he's still hungry.

i have mainly Florida kings and they'll eat you out of house and home... but i feed um 3-4 mice per feeding (hatchling, yearlings, sub adults, adults) and some times they feed twice per week!

feed your king more... one mouse per week just seem to be enough to keep him healthy but it won't hurt to give him more.

My adult Cal.King is a monster he would eat 7 days a week. He is a very active snake when I open his cage he always has a feeding response and shoots right out of his 30 gallon enclosure, he gets feed a jumbo mouse 36-50 grams 3 times a week. Anyway I personally wouldn’t feed two large mice to him maybe two small/medium mice or a medium mouse and a hopper. I wouldn’t use a rat pup only because there is a small chance that he only takes rats and refuses mice which makes him more expensive to care for. I would recommend feeding him a larger meal at least twice a week.

I would think that @ least 2 mice is par for the course w/ a Cal King over 2y.o. How big is he, and what size mice are you feeding?

I generally feed my kings 2 or 3 mice every 2 days in the late spring & summer months 1 or 2 mice every 3 or 4 days in early spring fall.

Thanks for so many replies people, I really appreciate it! I suppose my next question is: Is it possible to over-feed my king?
