At what size can rudicollis breed?

jasper2 Aug 06, 2007 07:22 AM

Hi,

I have got a young 1.2 rudicollis (i think I do) and I was wondering what size (weight and length)they need to be to reproduce. I know there are dozens of other variables, and breeding them isn't easy at all.
I've got mine for 7 months now and the largest 2 have grown from 35 grams to over 500 grams and about 2 feet. They were of course WC/FB so they didn't have the best start in life...
Is this a (reasonably) good groth rate or should they've been bigger by now?

Thanks, Jasper

Hello,

Give them some more time. If you are doing for them well, they will do the work. They sound a bit young/small-not ready yet(whatever term you like) and they do get to be nice large monitors too. Have you seen a four footer or better yet? Good luck and best to you- Mike

I know they are too small right now, but I wanted to know how much time I have to make them a big enclosure with deep substrate and all. Right now they are in a 4 foot terrarium, but I am planning to build a 10x5x7 enclosure, but I don't have the time for that until fall/begin winter.
I read a lot of posts here saying some females can stop reproducing for good after 1 or 2 hard times dropping their eggs. So I don't want the females to start cycling in this small terrarium yet.

I have never seen adult rudi's in the flesh. They are not that common in the trade here in Europe, and most I have seen are smaller than mine are now. (But I knew what I was getting into)

Do you have rudi's right now?

Jasper

Hello Jasper,

I would begin your project or at least start to piece it together at this point. If there is truth in the sterilization comment then I would not want to test that hypothesis. You do seem to have time before they reach that point but you and they will enjoy the 10 foot cage much more. No, rudi are not one of the species that I'm keeping right now... Best to you- Mike
