Late Breeding Hondos

tspuckler Aug 06, 2007 06:40 PM

These two were hooked up yeasterday. The male has already fathered eggs with other females. What's the latest you've had Hondos breed and successfully produce offspring?

Hey Tim

I guess that means I'll have to wait a little longer for my snow female!

Good luck with them

Hi Tim,
I've had hondos go into Sept. The latest offspring to hatch have been in early Dec. However, I found that the changing temps that accompany Sept often bring biological changes, which lead to more frequent egg binding. I lucked out in the past but I'd say you're probably safe into the 3rd-4th week of August.

Tim:

I've had Hondo clutches hatch in December. These were always from snakes laying their second clutches in late September. I'm just putting my males in with some females ready to breed for second clutches - although a few females are already swollen with the second clutches - so it looks I'll be there again ths year. I haven't noticed any problem with egg binding in second clutches. The few times it has happened to my females it has been on the first clutches.

Nice snows!

Rob,

Yes, Norm Damm will sometimes get "Christmas Hondos," but those are always second clutches. The odd thing is that this would be the first clutch ever for the female. The male is pursuing her far more intently than earlier in the year - I guess "better late than never" is a good slogan to use here.

I recently had my two Hypos het Amel (the female is also poss het Anery) hook up. The male is small, so I'm not sure if his sperm is viable, but I have my fingers crossed for a Hybino.

Since she is receptive, I also placed her with a proven Ghost from this year. Some of you might question that move, but I'd rather have the possibility of Hybinos or Ghosts. I wish I could back up all my unproven...and proven males...I just don't like slugs!!!

What would be really awesome is to have Hybinos and Ghosts in this clutch. But I'm getting way ahead of myself here...I'll post egg laying pictures if she gives me some nice white ones.

Pictured below are the Hypo Het Amels (the more tipped up one is the female, also poss het Anery) and the other male Ghost I used threw the real nice light ghost this year.

to different males, is it possible to have more than one father for each clutch? I heard kittens in a litter can each have a different father, so wondered if it was true for snakes.

Yes its possible. Each egg has a chance of being fertilized by both males sperm
