Alterna Mystery

Tom Anderson Aug 06, 2007 08:31 PM

I purchased this snake as a Juno road animal last year and came up short when I dug deeper about the locality data. Either I was intentionally misled or the snake changed hands too many times by people who weren't overly concerned with the data. I tracked it back three owners to Glades herps. Glades has sold wild-caught alterna in the past. Although RobRoy at Glades was helpful by forwarding the picture to a guy that sold him some WC alterna in the late 90s, no one remembered the snake.

In a last ditch effort before I write it off as a poor investment and lesson learned, thought one of you guys might recognize it.

Thanks for the help.

Tom

Good luck rooting out the locality data, but even if you do not find it, that is still a fine looking critter.

Thanks for looking, Lance. He is a really nice looking snake. We have a light blairs non-locality female we can pair him up with. They should produce some very light gray snakes.

If anyone out there can possibly ask some people they know who sold to glades herps in the past it might help Tom out. If he is W.C. it is ashame not to have the verified specific locality data.

I bought this juno male at the show in orlando in 1998 from a vendor who claimed it was produced by seven generations reptiles. The vendor seemed honest and I had no reason to believe he was not truthful but I went to the seven gen table but it was empty at the time, and as I understand it the owner of seven gen is now out of the business.

It would have been nice to get some specific info on the origin of the line and pictures of this snakes parents.

Does anyone else have some info on Seven generations and or the seven gen snakes produced in the late 90's that might help me out? I have their old price list but that's about it.

I bought some Alterna from Don Wilson in the early 90's but lost track of him a few years later. Anyone know where he went?

can you post some pictures in the mean time? What is/ was the locality of those alternas

Thanks!

FWIW--Don Wilson got several hatchling Juno Road alternas from me circa 1995-96. They may have become the breeders that your snake is derived from. He looks similar to a couple of those hatchlings. The founding parents were both from north of Baker's Xing.

Robert, Thank you very much for the info. I bought this snake in 1998 in Orlando Florida, but it was definitely not a hatchling, I suspect it was 2 or 3, and he was probably at least 24". he likely may have been Captive born in 95 or 96. As such I am hoping the vendor may have got the snake from seven generations but he was not actually produced by seven generations. Could it be that he may actually be one of yours?

here is a plain top view of him on the outside chance you might have a clutch or baby picture?

I really really aprecciate it! the more info I have the better. This guy has some offsping with a female from Gerry salmon and another female from the s curves, and even grandchildren on the way in a month or so.

Thanks,
Jim Dobis

Jim, I don't have those snakes any longer. What I had gotten from Don were some blairs phase Hwy 277 animals.

looks like the Van Horn animals but not a Juno at all.

jim_d Aug 07, 2007 08:38 AM

Norm, interesting, do you know of any Van Horn that were sold through glades? In my not so expert opinion Tom's snake looks like it would be more towards the east.

>>Norm, interesting, do you know of any Van Horn that were sold through glades? In my not so expert opinion Tom's snake looks like it would be more towards the east.

It's the huge spacing between primaries, a trait that usually manifests in the NW part of the range.

BTW I don't have a clue where it's from either.

i gotta agree with forks...my first thought....HEUCO....but i can't believe that locale would be sold to glades....just goes to show ...what dahe!! do we know?????......save our texas snakers QUASH HB-12

stevenxowens792 Aug 07, 2007 12:01 PM

Is that it is not WC. How many people do you know
that would sell an animal that looks like that.

I have seen Juno animals both WC and Captive that look
similar to it.

Good luck, the animals looks great.

I agree with your first thought.. that alterna people wouldn't get rid of a wild caught sanke that looks like this one.

I know that the guy I purchased it from got it in a trade and didn't care much about kingsnakes. The person who he traded with told him it was a Juno snake and that's all he knew.

There's a Juno snake on the alterna pages (the last one pictured) that looks kind of similar, but has more primary bands.

Thanks, Steven.

Forky is right about the primary distance and then again I have seen some east similar to that but the dominant features in that snake look NW.I have seen a few Van Horn animals and they all look like that animal. The only photo I know of is the Troy H. animal and I thought Forky had an Alterna of the month pic of it???

Joe Forks Aug 08, 2007 10:59 AM

from the Beach Mtns, should be in Culberson Gallery but it's not, so here it is...

Tom Anderson Aug 08, 2007 08:10 PM

That's a nice looking animal! And the first time I've seen a picture of a Van Horn alterna. Thanks a lot for posting. It's interesting that the snake has the same number of primaries as my snake. The Juno's I've seen have 15

This Juno was produced by Jim Dobis in 2003.
